2018 Ladies County Championships

General Club Noticeboard : 2018 Ladies County Championships

The glorious hot and sunny conditions continued for the final day of the 2018 L&RLCGA County Championship at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club making it ideal for both players and spectators.   Four players remained to contest the finals of the Championship and the Russell Trophy.

The Russell Trophy final was played over 18 holes – the finalists this year were Cath Arter (Rothley Park) and Kirsten Thorpe (Charnwood Forest).    It was a close fought match throughout, neither player pulling ahead by more than 1 shot.  The match went all the way to the 18th hole which Cath won to take the overall match 2 up.   Congratulations to Cath on winning the Russell Trophy for the first time and to Kirsten for reaching the final and making it such a close match.

The Championship final was battled out over 36 holes – Caz Parkes-Walley (Lutterworth) and Ellie York (Hinckley) were the finalists.  Both players started exceptionally well, scoring 36 and 34 gross over the first nine holes (par 35).  At the half way stage after 18 holes, Ellie was 1 hole up in a very close match.  There was some stunning golf played, in particular some excellent approach shots into the green.  The good golf continued into the second 18 holes and after 27 holes Caz had managed to go ahead by 2 shots.  Caz managed to hold onto her lead over the next few holes and finally won the match on the 16th hole to become the L&RLCGA 2018 County Champion.

Some excellent golf has been played throughout the weekend, the weather has been uncharacteristically hot and sunny and all spectators have enjoyed following the progress of the golfers over the three days.

Congratulations to all our players and winners over this weekend, and particularly to Caz Parkes-Walley our 2018 Champion, on not only winning this Championship for the third time but also pulling off the double again by winning the Strokeplay Championship on Friday.  Special congratulations also go to our Runner up Ellie York who scored the best gross score over 18 holes on Friday afternoon with a gross of 72 (Course par 71) playing off a handicap of 5.
